History of Wedderburn Community

history of wedderburn

Wedderburn Community House was first established in 1991 under the name Loddon Neighbourhood House and was located in the High Street in two old rickety rooms next to the Coach House Gallery and Museum.

The glorious building we now call home was originally built as the Wedderburn State School in 1865, when Wedderburn was a thriving gold and farming district. It holds a special place for many locals and they often reminisce about their childhood when visiting, as we have maintained as many of the original features as possible, including the old blackboard and arched timber ceilings.

A higher elementary school was built on the opposite side of town in 1961 and by the end of the 90’s it was deemed more efficient to combine the two schools. The State school grounds remained empty until 2001, when the Community House staff and Board members approached the Loddon Shire to purchase the school grounds and develop a Community Centre.

In 2004 Wedderburn Tourism and Inglewood District Health services moved into the old school precinct and we have worked side by side ever since. Government funding enabled us to extend the original buildings in 2015 adding a wing of health suites, reception area incorporating Visitor Information and internet café.

In 2014 the community garden Poo 2 Plate was established, providing free garden beds for locals to grow their own food and an orchard. In later year’s a nursery was added, offering the community cheap native and hardy cottage plants. Landscaping courses ran through WCH designed and built the beautiful gardens around the Community Centre, incorporating the Pioneer Hut (designed by Barb Beauliv) and the pizza oven.

Wedderburn Community House has come a long way in 30 years, now seen as the hub of the community. This was only possible due to the hard work and vision of past and present staff, volunteers and Board members. Thank you to all of those people for their commitment to their community.
